The Legend of Vox Machina: Season 2 Review

The Legend of Vox Machina Season 2 premieres on Prime Video on Jan. 20, 2023. Review by Rafael Motamayor.

Season 2 of The Legend of Vox Machina is larger, meaner, and funnier than its predecessor, shifting away from the prologue to a correct fantasy epic with a number of areas, a grand quest, and character facet missions. Despite an overabundance of tropes, the season will get by because of its charming voice forged and endearing characters, which get deepened in thrilling methods this season.

  1. Reminder: Series is out January 20th and I've read it will be same format as last time. 3 episode batches each week for 4 weeks running for a total of twelve episodes. Might be better to wait till it's all out and binge it/watch it over a single week. Whatever works for you. And Season 3 is already confirmed and is supposed to continue/conclude the arc. Also thanks for the review Rafael Motamayor.

  2. You keep mentioning tropes as a "just a given" reason to dock points but don't explain what the big deal is.
It's a comedy based on a game that relies on tropes for its core mechanics. Of course there are going to be tropes

  3. To be fair, the "Liberties on the source material" are not only because D&D isn't conductive to 30 minute TV episodes, but also the fact that they are pulling any and all D&D references from the show itself. Certain monsters such as the conflict with the Beholder, and references to Vecna and Orcus will be removed, and some story will be changed around to fit.

  4. Not to be that person, but all the items you call McGuffins are not a actual McGuffins

A real / original MacGuffin is an object, device, or event that is necessary to the plot and the motivation of the characters, but insignificant, unimportant, or irrelevant in itself.

Eg: the One Piece = McGuffins
Eg : the one ring = No McGuffins

Some people may say otherwise but I'm going with the original definition

  5. Kinda glad they seem to have truncated this season, actually. There was a LOT of crosstalk and mini goals the players were involved in.
And taking those creative liberties makes the story more fresh. For instance, it was VAX who had the idea of going inside the dragon. Considering he is being characterized as much more level-headed in this go around, it makes more sense for Scalan to make that suggestion.

  6. Part of what makes this great is the fact that it is animated. That allows the epic scenes and the goofy ones to feel just as in place; you can't get that with love action, sadly
